Verwood Pantomime Society began in 1984 and was started by 3 couples who were members of the local Drama Society for those wanting a lighter form of entertainment. They each donated £5 and held jumble sales etc to raise enough money to put on their first show which was in 1985 and was Mother Goose.

Over 500 Members and friends have come and gone through the years but 3 of the founder members are still involved with the show today. Some of you may know Ruth and Terry Long and Wendy Hampshaw.

Over the years the Society has won many awards, 25 of which were in the Dorset Village Pantomime Competitions including the Best Large Village Pantomime and Runner Up in the Best Wardrobe for our Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs.

First paper review for Verwood Pantomime Society

Most Rehearsals and all shows were held in the Memorial Hall until 2007 when The Hub was built and as growing Membership numbers meant we had almost outgrown the hall Our Committee asked the Members to vote on whether to stay or move to The Hub. By an almost unanimous vote the decision was made to move to The Hub where the facilities of a box office, tiered seating and purpose made dressing rooms were just too good to miss.

In 2009 we celebrated our 25th Anniversary with a lavish production of Cinderella complete with a real miniature Shetland pony to pull Cinderella's coach and our after show party was a really special event with lots of past members joining us, including another founder Member Ann Horner who now lives in Devon. Sadly the 2 other Founder Members Trevor Hampshaw and Roy Horner have passed away.

In recent years child protection regulations have made life very difficult for groups mixing both adult and junior members  but we are pleased to say that despite enormous amounts of paperwork and red tape we are still welcoming  huge numbers of children that want to join the Society each year and so far have accommodated every one of them that wants to join us, irrespective of their capabilities. Although there isn’t an upper age limit for our Members - and we have some who are 70+ - the lower age is school year 7 and we are very proud of the way everyone is encouraged to mix and to respect both their younger and older friends.

The Society's Members are often found taking part in community events like the Verwood Carnival where we enjoy singing and dancing along the route in full costume and take part in the Annual Rustic Fayre.

After show collections are held after each panto performance and usually raise around £800 for our chosen charities which have included Julia’s House, Bournemouth Hospital Oncology Amenities fund, The Caliko Stud, Verwood Day Centre, Great Ormond Street Hospital and  Help for Heroes.

New Members are always welcome for both on stage and the many back stage and front of house roles. Why not contact us for more information.
