Instructor Training

Motorcycling is a very fast growing industry with many people now realising the benefits of two wheels over four, particularly with growing congestion and high fuel costs. There's never been a better time to get into instructing.

Being an instructor is a demanding and rewarding role. A passion for motorcycling is a must, as is having excellent communication skills and incredible patience. Whilst not essential, having an advanced riding qualification will also help a great deal. A sound knowledge of the Highway Code is a must.

You'll need to have held a full motorcycle licence for at least 3 years and must be over the age of 21. The DSA also frown upon licence endorsements so if you have more than 3 penalty points you may find it a struggle to be issued an instructor licence.

If you meet the above criteria and are interested in pursuing a career in motorcycle instruction we can help.

You'll be introduced into a live teaching environment watching experienced instructors with actual pupils. You'll be encouraged to take notes and ask questions and at the end of the day the instructor will be available to go through your notes and give further help and advice. You'll be required to observe at least 3 CBT's before being handed over to Richard...

... who will conduct a simulated CBT with you acting as a pupil wanting to learn to ride. This will continue until you are assessed as competent to conduct a live CBT. At this stage we will apply to the DSA for a down-trained licence for you and once received, and subject to a successful supervised CBT, you will then move into instructor training - a module tested at the DSA.

During this stage you are encouraged to conduct as many live CBT's as possible (you'll be paid a full instructor wage for each one you do) to gain valuable experience.

Before you are sent to DSA head quarters in Cardington we will make sure you are fully prepared for the rigorous 2-day assessment you'll be subjected to. You are assessed in two areas - your ability to teach pupils and your ability to teach trainee instructors.

Subject to a successful pass at Cardington you are now a qualified CBT instructor. At this point you are in fact allowed to begin your own ATB and recruit and teach potential instructors. However, there's still the Direct Access qualification to go...

... so now you will shadow a DAS instructor throughout an entire course, again with Q&A sessions at the end of each day. After the shadow session you'll be handed back to Richard for a mock DAS course, again with Richard as the pupil. Once you're at the required standard you'll be sent back to Cardington for the half day DAS assessment.

Subject to a pass you'll now be a fully qualified DSA approved motorcycle instructor.

So what now? Well, we can offer you work if you'd like to gain some extra experience or you can set up your own ATB. We will advise you on all aspects of it and point you in the right direction for securing finances, insurance, equipment, motorcycles etc.

But it doesn't stop there. We'll be on-hand even after you've left us and set up on your own giving help and advice whenever you need it.

Course length depends on you. We will teach you until you are fully qualified. The more time you can give us the quicker we can get you qualified. Please call Richard for further information.
